For now, I have some software hacks to tackle missing features but I always need to bring a regular keyboard to type before my OS is started…

Thank you for your comments. We're at a point where additional funding will need invested to buy PCB's and components (we're out of stock of some components, and there are minimum orders to buy parts), and ideally some re-design to ramp up volume manufacturing to get the price down, improve product consistency/reliability, and increase adoption. We're keeping our eye out for a potential acquirer (not actively looking, but just pausing production for now and shifting focus while we evaluate). We've had interest from some individuals, but ideally it would be a much larger company with existing teams for manufacturing, marketing, etc., that would invest additional funds to take it to the next level and scale up volume manufacturing. There are lots of logistics for parts, etc. For now it's just "on hold" until we decide the path forward. I know there is interest from many in open sourcing it, but we want to explore our options a little before considering that path, as that path also will take time and resources to support people and answer questions, etc. We hope to recoup some of our investment if possible by a possible acquisition of some kind, and allow KeyMouse to live on while we shift our focus. We love the product and use it ourselves (and we know many of you do as well), but found we should stick to our core strengths in software development.
Wow I am heart broke. I know a $500 keyboard is a huge investment for the average person, but for professionals that use it every day it just makes since. I came to the forum to see about a programming a foot switch to work with the different layers. Now I am worried for what the future holds.

Thanks Stepan. Yeah, we're OK. It's just more expensive to produce and support than we thought. We're keeping our eye out for a larger company that can scale it up. Ideally it would be a big corporation that has been down this track before and has all the logistics and infrastructure in place.

I'm also mad at myself, I've been postponing buying a second keymouse and sending my old alpha in for a case upgrade and board fix, and now it seems it's too late...
I hope you guys find external funding or are able to sell, at this point I don't know what I'll do if mine breaks.
Since you mentioned that one of the problems is the minimum order size for some parts, maybe you would consider creating a pre-order list? People would be able to reserve a space on the list for a 100$ or something, and when you gather 10, 50 or a 100 people - whatever's needed, people would pay the rest, you purchase the parts and build. You could also adjust the price to make it profitable for you.
If you do this, I'm gonna be the first person on the list for sure! :-)
Also, if you still have the newer cases (either Medium or Large) I'd gladly buy a set, + the new mouse buttons, + a few scroll wheels, + whatever else you have and might break on mine :-). Please get back to me if this is possible.

I can totally second Radoslaw. It would be great if I could get an extra device and some spare parts. If it makes any difference, I am willing to buy the parts and assemble them myself.

I love my keymouse track and have been checking the website religiously in anticipation of the next iteration.
As others have mentioned, if keymouse is really going away I think a lot of wallets would open up if they were aware that there was a last chance to get spare devices and parts.

Maybe you could work with Drop(massdrop) to get a bulk order? that's how I got my ergodox infinity(gen 1 so essentially testing platform for the infinity team) and we were able to get enough people to place a bulk order to drop the price down enough. Maybe that would work?
i heard you spent alot of money with mechanical side with company in fountain valley. they don't care if the product they design can sell. should have stopped there.
@Daxiu The design company in California did really good work (although expensive). I think for companies with larger budgets they will do great. We just had to pull it in house to continue making revisions more sustainable. Our current design has been revised quite a bit from where they left off since our current design is built with our modular component system.

If the KeyMouse goal were just to make tons of money, then they would have never built the KeyMouse. They had a vision, and they couldn't rest until they saw it through. People who can do that are the ones that help to define what civilization can be, even if it doesn't always end up making them rich.
Kudos to the KeyMouse team for accomplishing something magnificent. Fingers crossed that they can still find a way to profit from this work. Other fingers crossed that the work continues forward.

VERY SAD to hear this news! I also would really appreciate some option to order a second unit or extra parts to ensure the longevity of my KeyMouse Track. I hesitate to imagine going back to working on a regular keyboard. Please let us know what we can do as a community to support you in making that possible! Just adding here to the sentiment. I really enjoyed my Keymouse Track, (and the PCB I got to create my custom one). I hope you can find a way to keep the company going, and wish you the best regardless.
Please give us a few months. We've gotten a ton of emails from users wishing us well and hoping we keep offering KeyMouse. We really appreciate all of your messages. You guys have been a great support. We are working on some things in the background for a possible USB only version (many support issues related to wireless, pairing, and battery). We also have some new punchdown based Cherry keys for cleaner row/column wiring (plus possible backlight). After we test further we will re-consider. Sometimes it just gets a bit overwhelming doing hardware manufacturing and coordinating so many parts with inventory (coming from the software world where updates can be shipped to customers easily). It will take us some time, so thanks for your patience. Our primary KeyMouse products will remain "out of stock" in the meantime.

Hello, I just discovered keymouse only today, but I wanted to throw my hat into the ring and say that I definitely hope you find the right fit for continuing this product. I've been wondering for a while if I could fuse my mouse and my right-hand keyboard (I have an ergo pro split keyboard and an ergonomic mouse) and finally I found this product, sadly to see that it is no longer being made. That said, I understand you are all probably busy looking for options, so I will keep an ear to the ground on this matter. I hope you are successful so that I can make an investment in a keymouse myself.

I also just discovered this. I agree that USB only (no battery, no Bluetooth) is ideal for a first-run mass-produced product. I also agree that we should drop the back-light. Let's make this thing as simple as possible to get people used to the idea that this is how the keyboard should have been built in the first place. After we have mass awareness, then we can start making/licensing premium models.
I would also focus only on the trackball version since it allows you to make just one model. Don't get me wrong, I like the mouse better than the trackball, but I am willing to compromise to get this back on the market. Even without the custom options, this is lightyears ahead of anything else out there.

I just want to put out there that I do value having Bluetooth and a battery. It's not often, but when mobile working for long hours it's amazing. Just sit down, whip out the trackmouses, spread out the arms, lean back and just get to work. Wires get in the way, and if you are lucky enough to be in a reclining situation, potentially dangerous. I have not had any connection issues that couldn't be solved with a quick restart.
I suppose I could live without wireless ... but I do notice the lack of a back-light often. Low light work conditions happen.

Bluetooth and battery do have value and although I personally wouldn't mind paying extra for that, at this point in the product life cycle, it is more important that it achieves mass adoption. Once thousands of units per month are being shipped, there is the flexibility to add features. Until then trying to support those features is putting the whole project at risk.
Maybe it would be worth running a poll to see what features us "superfan" users actually consider essential. I tried both mouse and track version and ended up settling on track to my surprise. I also now use them wired instead of wireless. The wireless functionality went to sleep too often on me and I got tired of waiting for the devices to wake several times per day.
I ended up buying my own USB cables so I could run a separate cable straight back from each Track instead of the "horseshoe" cable that daisy chained the units as was intended for the cables that shipped with the device. (Also got white cables to match my desk).
If you remove the need for wireless, I wonder if it opens up the possibility of collaborating with companies like ergodox that are operating in the same space and have developed some really nice tools for configuring custom keyboards and flashing firmware, etc. I say this naively without doing any real feasibility research

It's unfortunate hardware is so hard, but incredible that your "software" team has built a product that's attracted such a loyal fanbase and new interested parties that just discovered this "instant buy" that they've been "waiting for since forever" (myself included). I hope you take a lot of pride in that.
Your true supporters no doubt appreciate your efforts and understand whichever direction you may need to go, but returning to the crowdfunded preorder model might be an interesting answer to the challenges/unknowns you might be facing. You might even be able to find extra hardcore supporters for some exclusive reward levels that don't offer too much. Pebble successfully returned to Kickstarter, and you're clearly more unique in this space.

@Pete We have a decent inventory of switches in stock with pins so unless we get a bunch of people ordering replacement parts, I think we will have plenty for people buying spares and replacements. We have an updated Cherry PCB module for future versions of our products.
